Pickering and Scarborough sit along the eastern lakeshore, one in Durham Region and one within the City of Toronto. They are neighbours geographically and quite different in character, but they share the same route west and the same airport question.
Routes to Pearson
From Scarborough the options are Highway 401 westbound or a combination of the Don Valley Parkway and the 401, and both are heavily loaded at peak. From Pickering the 401 is the default with Highway 407 as the faster alternative. In all cases the journey crosses the full width of the city, which is the single most important thing to understand when planning a departure time.
Scarborough
- A large and diverse community with a high volume of long-haul international travel.
- Extended families frequently travelling together on the same flight.
- Scarborough Town Centre and the surrounding business area generating corporate demand.
- The Bluffs and lakeside parks drawing visitors and events through the summer.
Family travel with substantial luggage is common here, and an SUV or Sprinter is usually the right vehicle rather than a sedan.
Pickering
Pickering is largely residential with a strong commuter population and significant local employment, including the nuclear generating station. Airport work here follows the Durham pattern: long journeys west, early departures and a preference for booking the same arrangement repeatedly.
Late arrivals
Coming back into Pickering or eastern Scarborough on a late flight is where pre-booking pays for itself. Ground transport supply at Pearson after midnight is thin, and the fare for a long eastbound trip on demand is rarely favourable. A booked vehicle is a fixed arrangement made while you were still thinking clearly.
