Toronto has one of the strongest restaurant scenes in North America and some of the worst conditions for driving to it. The neighbourhoods with the best food are precisely the ones where parking is hardest and a glass of wine makes the drive home a problem.
Where parking is genuinely the issue
King West, Ossington, Queen West, Yorkville and the St Lawrence area are all difficult on a weekend evening. Street parking is scarce, garages fill early, and the walk from whatever space you find is longer than it looks in February. Being dropped at the door and collected afterwards changes the evening more than people expect.
Dining across several stops
- Cocktails in one neighbourhood, dinner in another.
- A tasting menu followed by somewhere quieter for a nightcap.
- Dinner before a show in the entertainment district.
- A group splitting the evening between two venues.

Business dining
Entertaining clients works better when nobody at the table is calculating their drinks against the drive home. Collecting guests, delivering them to the restaurant and taking them home afterwards is a small addition to the cost of a dinner and it changes the tone of the evening. It also means the host is present for the whole conversation.
Timing around the reservation
Good restaurants hold a table for a limited window and then release it. We plan the pickup to arrive a few minutes early rather than exactly on time, and on a Friday evening in the core that buffer is the difference between keeping the reservation and apologising for it.
