Every group that goes out has the same unresolved conversation about who is driving. The usual answer is that someone volunteers, spends the evening on soda water, and quietly resents it. A designated driver service removes the conversation entirely.
How the service works
A professional chauffeur handles the driving for the evening. Depending on what you need, that means either our vehicle collecting and returning the group, or a chauffeur driving your own vehicle so that your car is at home at the end of the night rather than in a downtown garage.
Why this is worth arranging in advance
- Nobody in the group has to sit out the evening.
- Your own vehicle can come home with you.
- No surge pricing at closing time, and no waiting in the cold.
- The decision is made while everyone is sober, which is the point.
The law in Ontario is strict, and getting stricter
Ontario applies immediate roadside penalties in the warn range between 0.05 and 0.079 blood alcohol concentration, including licence suspension and financial penalties, well below the criminal threshold of 0.08. Novice and young drivers face a zero tolerance requirement. Police can also demand a breath sample without first needing to suspect impairment. The margin most people think they have does not exist.
It is not only about alcohol
Cannabis is legal in Canada and driving under its influence is not. The same immediate roadside consequences apply. A group that has been to a dinner where either was involved should not be making fine judgements about fitness to drive.
Occasions this suits
Office parties, birthdays, wedding receptions, sporting events, casino trips, and any ordinary Friday that turns into a longer evening than planned. If alcohol is likely, arrange the ride before you go.
